Approach the Sacrament with faith in the Lord’s Real Presence and with the right intention. Come not out of routine, or because everyone else is approaching the altar. Come to be nourished in order to strengthened to live the Christian life.
We should examine our conscience to determine if there is any grave sin for which we must be truly sorry and must confess before coming forward to receive. The sacrament of Penance removes the one obstacle that would block our receiving the grace of the holy banquet.
Approach the Holy Eucharist after praying to receive the graces we intentionally seek. This preparation can be long or short according to our situation, but it should be as careful and as intense as we can make
We should observe the Eucharistic Fast of one hour prior to receiving the Eucharist. This means not taking any food or drink—water and medicine excepted.
Offer a prayer of thanksgiving after receiving. We should refrain from leaving Church before the Mass is ended and use the time after communion to thank the Lord for the gift of Himself and to speak to him about all that is going on in our life.
