We gratefully acknowledge the gift of this year’s paschal candle to be used at Our Lady of Sorrows Church by Clara & Benedict Gioe. It is given in loving memory of the Gioe, Lombino, Persichilli, and Santitoro Families.
The Paschal candle, blessed during the Easter Vigil symbolizes the light of the Risen Christ. It is adorned with the a cross, the symbol of our salvation; the Greek letters Alpha and Omega, reminders of Christ who is the beginning and end of all things; five wax nails encasing grains of incense recalling the five precious wounds of the Lord crucified; and the numerals of the current year, a reminder of Christ’s presence here and now. The candle has a prominent place in the sanctuary during the fifty day season of Easter. It is also lit at baptisms and funerals throughout the year.
