The plants and bugs are starting to emerge in the garden as our visit there on March 8th confirmed. We even have a rabbit family nesting there. We discovered them while we were doing some initial weeding and clean up.
But we’re not “cleaning up” in the usual manner. The leaves, seed heads, and stalks of the perennial plants are left for birds to eat, to protect insect habitat and to nourish the soil.
Our goal has always been to follow Pope Francis’ proclamation to “care for our common home.” OLS-SA’s Pollinator Garden is definitely following that call by creating a safe haven for all of nature.
We’re planning to add more plants, redo the paths, add plant ID markers and submit the garden to receive a Monarch Waystation designation.
We’re also looking for donations of flat stones or slate to redo the paths. Please contact Sue McGuinness ([email protected]; 609-610-8506) or Anne Kantor ([email protected]; 609-586-6596).
