Monday, January 22, marks the 51st anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe vs Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide. While on June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, overturned the ruling, it moved the debate on abortion to the States. Thus, the work of establishing a culture of life where every human person is protected from conception to natural death continues. We can be sure that this volatile issue will continue to be played out in the public square, especially in this election year.
Abortion supporters are loud, powerful, and unrelenting. We cannot allow theirs to be the only voices heard. We must be a strong voice for those who cannot speak for themselves! Respecting the sanctity of life also means to advocate and secure the dignity of others in our society who are also vulnerable: refugees who suffer, the elderly and disabled who are often seen as a burden, the poor who are so often forgotten, and the dying. Our culture is fraught with threats to human life and so we must pray and work to establish a culture of life. I think this is what our parish respect life group strives to do—reminding us of the vital issues that require our voice in the public square and our prayers in the presence of the Lord!
