Current Status in the Wake of the Supreme Court Abortion Decision
While New Jersey had enshrined the right to an abortion into State Law in anticipation of the US Supreme Court ruling, the Governor last Friday signed into law two bills, supported by our district legislators, that expand abortion services in our State.
Of the two bills signed Friday, the first prohibits those who receive or perform an abortion in NJ from being extradited to a state that restricts or criminalizes the procedure. The second bars public agencies in NJ from providing information that helps abortion-related investigations in other States. It also requires NJ abortion providers to obtain written consent from patients before releasing their information to those states.
NJ also changed its regulations last year so that some licensed medical professionals other than physicians can perform abortions. Thousands of providers could choose to be trained in abortion procedures.
The administration proposes a greater expansion of services by mandating insurance coverage for abortion with no out-of-pocket costs to the patients and a $20 million allocation of state funds to train providers, increase security, and expand and modernize abortion facilities. So yes, you'll be paying for abortions, even for out-of-state recipients, with your tax dollars.
