Easter Sunday and its Season

The celebration of Easter Sunday is extended by an Octave (8 days) until the following Sunday. Each day has the rank of “solemnity.”

• A renewal of baptismal promises may be made on Easter Sunday
• During the Octave, the Gloria is recited or sung and  a double “alleluia” is added to the dismissal of the Mass
• The Easter Season is celebrated for fifty days, ending on Pentecost.
• The Paschal Candle, a symbol of the presence of the Risen Lord among his people is placed in the sanctuary near the altar or ambo.
