Our Collection For Retired, Elderly And Infirm Priests Set For July 25-26
As we observe on July 26 the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, established by Pope Francis in 2021, our Diocese will take up a special collection for our Retired, Elderly, and Infirm Priests Fund.
This annual diocesan-wide collection coincides with the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus. Begun in 2022 by Bishop O’Connell, the fund supports more than 80 diocesan priests in their retirement housing and healthcare needs.
Kevin Cimei, diocesan chief financial officer, reported that $339K was collected last year—a 6% increase over the prior years.
Our Church has a great treasure in the elder members of its community – not only among family members, but priests as well whom the Bishop has called “our spiritual grandparents.” They continue to pray for us and many generously continue to minister in parishes in retirement.
