What is the Holy Eucharist? If it is only a symbol, Flannery O’Connor once quipped, “well then to hell with it.” Far from being profane, this is perfectly precise. If it is bread, I, and everyone else have been fools, believing a ridiculous lie. I should no more genuflect before the host than I should the bread of my cupboard. But if it is what Christ said it is, then the only proper response is adoration. There is no adequate response that lies between these two poles. The only thing one cannot do when confronted with the reality of the Holy Eucharist is to be indifferent.
