The reception of this sacrament [the Eucharist] has the effect…of changing us into that which is eaten, instead of what is eaten being transformed into the consumer. The love of Christ transforms the one who feeds on his Body and Blood into an active lover of Christ…But what if the recipient does not love? How many times we have seen someone (often ourselves) come straight from Mass with the same wicked behavior that preceded it? Did that person (we) receive the actual Body and Blood of Christ? What if the priest was wicked before and after? Did he truly confect the Body and Blood of Christ? Neither the priest’s piety, nor the fidelity of the recipient changes the objectivity of the Body and Blood. For our participation and reception to be fruitful, we must possess active faith and charity to receive.
