The Presentation of the Gifts

The instruction of the Roman Missal states that “It is desirable that the participation of the faithful be expressed by an offering, whether of bread and wine for the celebration of the Eucharist and/or other gifts to relieve the needs of the Church and of the poor. The offerings of the faithful are received by the priest, assisted by the acolyte or other minister.”  [#140]

We should like to maintain this custom during our weekend Masses.  However, we have found that many people hesitate to bring the gifts forward or do not present them at all. This has caused us to omit the presentation at a few Masses. Those who wish to present the gifts of bread and wine, especially when the intention of the Mass is for a family member or friend, should inform the usher or a minister in the sacristy prior to the Mass to ensure that the gifts are placed on the table in the nave. The two persons presenting the gifts should be dressed modestly and should proceed to the offertory table at the conclusion of the Universal Prayer (Prayers of the Faithful).
